If the shutdown continues, the first fully missed paycheck will cover the period from October 5th to October 18th, leaving families scrambling to make ends meet.
Take, for example, the thousands of federal workers earning just $32,000 a year in roles like the Forest Service or Park Service. As Randy Erwin, president of the National Federation of Federal Employees, points out, these individuals already earn 25% less than their private-sector counterparts. ‘They can’t afford to go without pay for any period of time,’ Erwin emphasizes. Here’s the controversial part: While federal employees are legally guaranteed back pay once the shutdown ends, thanks to a 2019 law, federal contractors aren’t so lucky. Military members aren’t immune either. Their next payday is October 15th, but if the shutdown continues, they’ll miss out too. House Democrats have urged Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to pass the Pay Our Troops Act, which would ensure military personnel and civilian employees get paid during the shutdown. But Johnson blames Democrats for ‘playing games,’ while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) counters that Republicans are refusing to compromise.
